It’s Just Ann by Bel Watson

Title: It’s Just Ann

Author: Bel Watson

Published: March 1st, 2015

Genre: YA Contemporary

Rating: 4.5/5

Summary from Wattpad:

“Let’s get the facts straight. I am no heroine and I will never bring pride to my family. I am what you could call a failure. My grades? Average. My social life? Average. Talents? Hmm… well, I think I have none. I’m not exceptional in any way and I know I’m a disappointment for my father. And in this day and age there’s no way I could just take my father’s place to save him from a horrible fate. There is a huge weight on my shoulders but I can’t carry it no matter how hard I try. I have no idea what I can do, I only know what I can’t do. Yet I still would try anything to make my father proud, even just once. Oh right, I forgot to tell you whom I was name after. Yes, I was named after Mulan, that bright heroine who saved China and brought pride to her family. Talk about big expectations. But Mulan doesn’t suit me, so it’s just Ann.”

Review:

I really loved this book I found the book on Wattpad and you can find it here. This book is a part of the “Aware Princess” series which started as a fan-fiction series about One Direction (I was/still am a big Directioner) but morphed into general fiction. This is one of my favorite books and I’m surprised it hasn’t been published yet. The plot is very interesting and dynamic and it explores friendships and familial relationships. It also explores the idea of stepping up in life to meet new challenges such a defeating the huns or taking over your father’s company. What really struck me about this book was how diverse this cast was which I really enjoyed. The author strove to create three-dimensional characters and also made these characters diverse without making them into clichés. The male leads in this were 110% swoon worthy. Can someone please get me a Charlie because he is a dreamboat? This book was fantastic and I would definitely recommend it also it’s very accessible on Wattpad.

Review:

Happy Fourth of July!! I thought this book would be a great review to celebrate the holiday! I actually listened to the book as an audio book which I got in CD form from the library. Turns out I read the second book in this series years before I read the first one. I would totally recommend this book but I did find this book to be a little bit young for my age. The plot was another “woe is me I’m not popular and my family doesn’t understand me” stories. Which some people really enjoy and relate to but I moved on from that stage in my life after 8th grade. If you are a little older and this plot seemed as young to you as it seemed to me I would recommend reading the second book. The plot’s pretty easy to follow and I think its a good read for high schoolers like myself. But anything by Meg Cabot is always going to be a little saucy and a great read.

Cute Summer Reads

Raise your hand if you thought you’d find a summer love/fling/bae this summer! I know I’m definitely raising my hand (Bethany you know you are too). Now keep your hand raised if this did not happen! *Me and a million other girls keep our hands raised* Every year I tell myself I will find a summer romance for the ages. Full of cute dates and hand holding and all of those cute YA Romance worthy moments. But, a summer romance has not yet graced my presence. They are unrealistic but we all need our summer fling fix and while you may not have a real one my coping method is always to read a book about a cute summer fling (or a book with romancey summer flingy feelings) that has some awesome characters to live through. So, here are my recommendations for some books that will give you those cute summer flingy feelings; (oh and i’m gonna rate them on the “flirty scale” with cute kiss emojis 1 kiss=”OMG THAT WAS SO CUTE”  5 kisses=”How can I live with this much adorable/swoon-worthy romance!?”

I just recently read this book a couple of months ago and I absolutely loved it. You’ll have to read a full description on Goodreads but the book is set in a cute beach town and is very adorable <3.

“You couldn’t just pick and choose at will when someone depended on you, or loved you. It wasn’t like a light switch, easy to turn on or off. If you were in, you were in. Out, you were out.” — Sarah Dessen, Along for the Ride

I read this during the winter and I feel absolutely in love this was sooooooo great!!!

“It was exactly as he’d thought it would be, like the first time and the millionth time all at once, like being wide awake, like losing his balance. Only this time, it wasn’t just him; this time, they were losing their balance together.”

Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen

c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415 c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415

I know I post a lot about Sarah Dessen in these kinds of challenges but she is the master of YA romance! I love this book because while it does have some very cute romancey moments I think it also talks about friendship and self-esteem and I love that. It also talks about when the romance doesn’t always work out and I think that’s great too.

“for once, you believed in yourself. you believed you were beautiful and so did the rest of the world.”

I read this book last summer and I enjoyed it so much. The relationship was so cute and absolutely darling and at points it reminded me of those weird indie romance movies but I loved it. Especially because the book trailer was done by this film maker I love so much so you should totally check it out also I think the trailer gives you sooo many feels; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDwuE16oC5w

JUST READ IT THERE ARE ICE CREAM CONES ON THE COVER! Seriously though this book is very summery and very good.

Instead of a song I am linking my favorite short film. It’s by Yulin Kuang and it’s full of Harry Potter references and all of the feels and it is aptly named I Ship It

Things I’ve Learned From My 17ish Years on Earth

I recently turned 17 at the beginning of the month so I thought I’d share some lovely life lessons I’ve learned in my 17 something years on Earth. So please enjoy all I’ve learned in list form;

  1. Love yourself.Trust me I know this can be so very hard to do but it can make your life so much better you’ll feel happy and confident because of it. Just trust me, learn to love yourself.
  2. Don’t buy into the idea that having a boyfriend/girlfriend will make your life suddenly better. Sorry darling but it just doesn’t work that way you’ll still feel a little off or unhappy no matter who’s by your side
  3. Learning how to do winged eyeliner is a pain but it’s completely worth it.
  4. Find good friends they make life shine a little brighter
  5. Breakups suck but you’ll get through it (it helps though to watch netflix, make sappy playlists, and hang out with friends though)
  6. Don’t do things that make you unhappy its not worth it and you’ll just feel sucky about it
  7. While, friends are great they’re not always forever my mom always says “Friends are either here for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.”
  8. Find you’re style if you like skater skirts wear them if stilettos make you feel like you can crush a small army than WEAR THOSE FUCKING STILETTOS! Wear whatever makes you feel AMAZING no matter what people say.
  9. Tea is amazing drink it copiously
  10. You’re going to do cringey things as you grow up. You may say something bitchy, or unkind, or just really freaking stupid. But, its okay as long as you forgive yourself, apologize, and do better next time.
  11. Learn how you affect the world around you. It may be little like how eating meat greatly affects our environment or how you can change how you use social media to make your and other lives better. Be educated about these things so you can make informed educated decisions throughout your life.
  12. Drink water its good for you dummy
  13. Brush your teeth for the duration of a pop song its good for your teeth and you’ll get to work on your dance moves
  14. GET INVOLVED. Whether that be in your community, at school, or with your family. Just go out and DO THINGS.
  15. If you want to change the world even just a little bit organizations like dosomething.org and Peta2 are super helpful
  16. Find yourself attractive with or without makeup cause you’re super hot either way
  17. Don’t shame or make fun of people for doing what makes them happy whether its putting on make up, dancing like a crazy person, or reading way too much. Just because you don’t think its “cool” doesn’t give you the right to be an asshole because someone doing what makes them happy
  18. Education is important it may suck a some points but its worth it and you’re getting a great opportunity that many people sadly don’t have
  19. Spend time with yourself. Plan an evening to just have some me time and understand yourself a little bit more. ITS WORTH IT. And you have to be with yourself you’re whole life so you should learn to love being you with or without someone else.
  20. Do what you think is right. And forgive yourself when you don’t. It’s tough to do especially when friends are telling you to do something else but it pays off.

And finally…

21. Try to live with no regrets before I do something I think when I’m 70 years old will I really regret going for this or doing something embarrassing and the answer is almost always “no.” Audition for that play, audition for that team, apply for your dream college because you won’t regret going for it when you’re older you’ll regret not even trying at all.

I hope these tips helped all of you out and if you ever need any advice or someone to talk to just check out my contact me tag and let me know. I love all of you guys and just know life is hard but you can always get through it with a good song, a nice book, and a helping hand.

Madison

“A fight is going on inside me,” said an old man to his son. “It is a terrible fight between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other wolf is good. he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you.”

The son thought about it for a minute and then asked, “Which wolf will win?”

The old man replied simply, “The one you feed.”

My Thoughts On Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli and “fitting in”

So, in my last post I talked about how I just recently finished up Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. But, what I didn’t mention is that was the THIRD time I read that book and if you know my reading habits well you know that I almost never re-read. So, Stargirl is an outlier for me just and she was an outlier herself as a character. Because I love this book so much I just thought I’d have a little chat about it with you guys online and we can really just explore the ideas and concepts of this book that I find so endearing. The thing that keeps drawing me back to this book is of course, Stargirl. She is enlightening, amazing, and so overwhelmingly positive and kind it makes my heart shine.

“She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to a cork board like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew.”

While this book has it’s flaws Stargirl is what makes it all better for me Stargirl is the kind of girl I want to be. And, because of my undying love for her I probably do not see her flaws so please do not make me aware of them. I think what astounds me most about her is her incredible sense of self and never-ending care she has for others. She sings students happy birthday on their birthday and she makes cards for strangers who shes never met. What I really love about her is that she is a person who cares for others with no ulterior motive.

The main idea that Jerry Spinelli tries to confront in this book is conformity the idea of “fitting in.” I’m sure we all know about this idea of “fitting in” especially those of us in high school like myself. The thing is it’s tough to be different and truly be yourself when we live in a world where there’s so much pressure to be like everyone else. Especially during our teenage years when we have so much to deal with and the majority of the time fitting in is so much easier than standing out. This book shows both sides of this perspective by having Leo’s perspective who always tries to fit in and stay with the crowd and having Stargirl who is just so beautifully brave and loves being exactly who she is. The author shows these contrasts well and really shows the idea that being yourself is absolutely beautiful but its not easy. I guess I can’t really explain all of my thoughts on this book in writing. But, what I really wanted to say was that this book really shows that if you be yourself other people can truly see the beauty that shines within you and while everyone may not like it you will love yourself. This book is a beautiful read and I highly suggest you read it.

Sorry for the general craziness of this post.

till next time…

xoxo,

Madison

-comment down below if you want to talk about life, love, and infinitely more-

also here’s some of some quotes about the beautiful girl stargirl ❤

“You’ll know her more by your questions than by her answers. Keep looking at her long enough. One day you might see someone you know.”

“The earth is speaking to us, but we can’t hear because of all the racket our senses are making. Sometimes we need to erase them, erase our senses. Then – maybe – the earth will touch us. The universe will speak. The stars will whisper.”

“She was bendable light: she shone around every corner of my day.”

The Fall-Time Cozy Book Tag!

Hey guys so I’ve been seeing this tag floating around and I most recently saw it on Book Snacks. So, I’d thought I’d do this tag to celebrate this wonderful time of the year! I hope you enjoy!

Crunching Leaves:The world is full of color. Choose a book that has reds, oranges, and yellows on the cover.

I choose Taken At Dusk by C.C Hunter because I absolutely love this fantasy series and this cover totally screams fall sunset to me!

Cozy Sweater: It’s finally cold enough to wear warm cozy clothing. What book gives you the warm fuzzies?

A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall is soooo very cute! I love the way she uses different perspectives and it reminds me of how sweet and sorta awkward having a crush can be :).

Fall Storm: The wind is howling and the rain is pounding. Choose your favorite book or genre that you would like to read on a stormy day

As you guys know my two favorite genres are fantasy and contemporary. 🙂 This is a really hard decision but I think I’d read some fantasy books because they are the perfect addition to any stormy day. But if I were to read something contemporary I would definitely read Eleanor & Park that book is so cute. ❤

Cool Crisp Air: Who’s the coolest character you’d want to trade places with?

I would definitely trade place with Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter! First of all her name is pretty awesome, she has some amazing friends, and she has magical powers! Also, she is super sweet and caring 🙂

Hot Apple Cider: What under hyped book do you want to see become the biggest, hottest thing?

I really love this book it doesn’t have great review on Goodreads but I found it to be deliciously creepy and really captivating.

Coat, Scarves and Mittens: The weather has turned cold and it’s time to cover up. What’s the most embarrassing book cover you own that you like to keep hidden in public?

I actually really like this book it’s just the covers a little bit cheesy. I’m mostly embarrassed by it because when I got it in seventh grade from the library my mom asked me about the cover and winked. So, that basically made it the most embarrassing book over to me after that. 🙂

Pumpkin Spice: What’s your favorite fall time comfort food/foods?

Okay, so tea isn’t technically a food but I love it during this time of the year. Specifically the Candy Cane Green Tea from Trader Joe’s which is MY FAVORITE TEA OF ALL TIME! You have to try it!

Well, I hoped you enjoyed my tag I loved doing it it was so much fun! I tag all of you guys and if you would like just comment down below if you’re planning on doing it and I’ll include your blog in my post so people can check it out!

XOXO,

Madison

A SONG FROM ME TO YOU:

Little More Time by Ciaran Lavery

“Gimme just a little more time and I’ll be flowing to your door.

Just like a seed all my moves are slow I’m always heading for unsure.

I like to think I’m not a complicated man, but then again I can’t be sure.

So give me just a little more time, you know, you’ll give me til the early morn’.

I play the flute in a rag doll suit, and you wear the overcoat.

I never wanted you more than the time you buttoned I across your throat. You held my arm like an anchor would tie itself onto a boat.”
