It’s Just Ann by Bel Watson

Title: It’s Just Ann

Author: Bel Watson

Published: March 1st, 2015

Genre: YA Contemporary

Rating: 4.5/5

Summary from Wattpad:

“Let’s get the facts straight. I am no heroine and I will never bring pride to my family. I am what you could call a failure. My grades? Average. My social life? Average. Talents? Hmm… well, I think I have none. I’m not exceptional in any way and I know I’m a disappointment for my father. And in this day and age there’s no way I could just take my father’s place to save him from a horrible fate. There is a huge weight on my shoulders but I can’t carry it no matter how hard I try. I have no idea what I can do, I only know what I can’t do. Yet I still would try anything to make my father proud, even just once. Oh right, I forgot to tell you whom I was name after. Yes, I was named after Mulan, that bright heroine who saved China and brought pride to her family. Talk about big expectations. But Mulan doesn’t suit me, so it’s just Ann.”

Review:

I really loved this book I found the book on Wattpad and you can find it here. This book is a part of the “Aware Princess” series which started as a fan-fiction series about One Direction (I was/still am a big Directioner) but morphed into general fiction. This is one of my favorite books and I’m surprised it hasn’t been published yet. The plot is very interesting and dynamic and it explores friendships and familial relationships. It also explores the idea of stepping up in life to meet new challenges such a defeating the huns or taking over your father’s company. What really struck me about this book was how diverse this cast was which I really enjoyed. The author strove to create three-dimensional characters and also made these characters diverse without making them into clichés. The male leads in this were 110% swoon worthy. Can someone please get me a Charlie because he is a dreamboat? This book was fantastic and I would definitely recommend it also it’s very accessible on Wattpad.

Review:

Happy Fourth of July!! I thought this book would be a great review to celebrate the holiday! I actually listened to the book as an audio book which I got in CD form from the library. Turns out I read the second book in this series years before I read the first one. I would totally recommend this book but I did find this book to be a little bit young for my age. The plot was another “woe is me I’m not popular and my family doesn’t understand me” stories. Which some people really enjoy and relate to but I moved on from that stage in my life after 8th grade. If you are a little older and this plot seemed as young to you as it seemed to me I would recommend reading the second book. The plot’s pretty easy to follow and I think its a good read for high schoolers like myself. But anything by Meg Cabot is always going to be a little saucy and a great read.

Cute Summer Reads

Raise your hand if you thought you’d find a summer love/fling/bae this summer! I know I’m definitely raising my hand (Bethany you know you are too). Now keep your hand raised if this did not happen! *Me and a million other girls keep our hands raised* Every year I tell myself I will find a summer romance for the ages. Full of cute dates and hand holding and all of those cute YA Romance worthy moments. But, a summer romance has not yet graced my presence. They are unrealistic but we all need our summer fling fix and while you may not have a real one my coping method is always to read a book about a cute summer fling (or a book with romancey summer flingy feelings) that has some awesome characters to live through. So, here are my recommendations for some books that will give you those cute summer flingy feelings; (oh and i’m gonna rate them on the “flirty scale” with cute kiss emojis 1 kiss=”OMG THAT WAS SO CUTE”  5 kisses=”How can I live with this much adorable/swoon-worthy romance!?”

I just recently read this book a couple of months ago and I absolutely loved it. You’ll have to read a full description on Goodreads but the book is set in a cute beach town and is very adorable <3.

“You couldn’t just pick and choose at will when someone depended on you, or loved you. It wasn’t like a light switch, easy to turn on or off. If you were in, you were in. Out, you were out.” — Sarah Dessen, Along for the Ride

I read this during the winter and I feel absolutely in love this was sooooooo great!!!

“It was exactly as he’d thought it would be, like the first time and the millionth time all at once, like being wide awake, like losing his balance. Only this time, it wasn’t just him; this time, they were losing their balance together.”

Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen

c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415 c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415

I know I post a lot about Sarah Dessen in these kinds of challenges but she is the master of YA romance! I love this book because while it does have some very cute romancey moments I think it also talks about friendship and self-esteem and I love that. It also talks about when the romance doesn’t always work out and I think that’s great too.

“for once, you believed in yourself. you believed you were beautiful and so did the rest of the world.”

I read this book last summer and I enjoyed it so much. The relationship was so cute and absolutely darling and at points it reminded me of those weird indie romance movies but I loved it. Especially because the book trailer was done by this film maker I love so much so you should totally check it out also I think the trailer gives you sooo many feels; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDwuE16oC5w

JUST READ IT THERE ARE ICE CREAM CONES ON THE COVER! Seriously though this book is very summery and very good.

Things I’ve Learned From My 17ish Years on Earth

I recently turned 17 at the beginning of the month so I thought I’d share some lovely life lessons I’ve learned in my 17 something years on Earth. So please enjoy all I’ve learned in list form;

  1. Love yourself.Trust me I know this can be so very hard to do but it can make your life so much better you’ll feel happy and confident because of it. Just trust me, learn to love yourself.
  2. Don’t buy into the idea that having a boyfriend/girlfriend will make your life suddenly better. Sorry darling but it just doesn’t work that way you’ll still feel a little off or unhappy no matter who’s by your side
  3. Learning how to do winged eyeliner is a pain but it’s completely worth it.
  4. Find good friends they make life shine a little brighter
  5. Breakups suck but you’ll get through it (it helps though to watch netflix, make sappy playlists, and hang out with friends though)
  6. Don’t do things that make you unhappy its not worth it and you’ll just feel sucky about it
  7. While, friends are great they’re not always forever my mom always says “Friends are either here for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.”
  8. Find you’re style if you like skater skirts wear them if stilettos make you feel like you can crush a small army than WEAR THOSE FUCKING STILETTOS! Wear whatever makes you feel AMAZING no matter what people say.
  9. Tea is amazing drink it copiously
  10. You’re going to do cringey things as you grow up. You may say something bitchy, or unkind, or just really freaking stupid. But, its okay as long as you forgive yourself, apologize, and do better next time.
  11. Learn how you affect the world around you. It may be little like how eating meat greatly affects our environment or how you can change how you use social media to make your and other lives better. Be educated about these things so you can make informed educated decisions throughout your life.
  12. Drink water its good for you dummy
  13. Brush your teeth for the duration of a pop song its good for your teeth and you’ll get to work on your dance moves
  14. GET INVOLVED. Whether that be in your community, at school, or with your family. Just go out and DO THINGS.
  15. If you want to change the world even just a little bit organizations like dosomething.org and Peta2 are super helpful
  16. Find yourself attractive with or without makeup cause you’re super hot either way
  17. Don’t shame or make fun of people for doing what makes them happy whether its putting on make up, dancing like a crazy person, or reading way too much. Just because you don’t think its “cool” doesn’t give you the right to be an asshole because someone doing what makes them happy
  18. Education is important it may suck a some points but its worth it and you’re getting a great opportunity that many people sadly don’t have
  19. Spend time with yourself. Plan an evening to just have some me time and understand yourself a little bit more. ITS WORTH IT. And you have to be with yourself you’re whole life so you should learn to love being you with or without someone else.
  20. Do what you think is right. And forgive yourself when you don’t. It’s tough to do especially when friends are telling you to do something else but it pays off.

And finally…

21. Try to live with no regrets before I do something I think when I’m 70 years old will I really regret going for this or doing something embarrassing and the answer is almost always “no.” Audition for that play, audition for that team, apply for your dream college because you won’t regret going for it when you’re older you’ll regret not even trying at all.

I hope these tips helped all of you out and if you ever need any advice or someone to talk to just check out my contact me tag and let me know. I love all of you guys and just know life is hard but you can always get through it with a good song, a nice book, and a helping hand.

Madison

“A fight is going on inside me,” said an old man to his son. “It is a terrible fight between two wolves. One wolf is evil. He is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other wolf is good. he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you.”

The son thought about it for a minute and then asked, “Which wolf will win?”

The old man replied simply, “The one you feed.”

The Disney Book Tag!

One of my favorite booktubers Kat (from Katytastic) created this tag a couple months ago and I felt that I had to do it! I hope you enjoy the tag! Also, comment down below your favorite Disney movie, I personally liked Sleeping Beauty best :). Fun fact: When I was little I used to scream “DON’T TOUCH THE NEEDLE” at Aurora when I watched Sleeping Beauty.

btw I’m listening to Disney music while writing this 🙂

The Little Mermaid…A character who is out of their element a “fish out of water”

America from The Selection fits this description perfectly, she comes from a poor family and a difficult lifestyle and then suddenly she’s living in a castle and she has to learn how to act properly and cope with this complete change of setting.

Cinderella… A character who goes through a major transformation

For this I choose Virginia from The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things she starts off with little confidence and to be completely honest she hates herself but in the end she has a new found confidence and respect for herself and who she is.

Snow White… A book with an eclectic cast of characters

The cast from Will Grayson, Will Grayson is certainly eclectic they’re are so many different personalities in this book. The authors of this book really bring together so many different characters and they make it work excellently!

Sleeping Beauty… A book that put you to sleep

I found New Moon by Stephanie Meyer to be especially boring, young Madison loved the Twilight series. But, I always thought New Moon was just the worst book of the series the majority of it is just Bella moping around waiting for Edward.

The Lion King… A character who had something traumatic happen to them in childhood

Okay, Harry Potter totally fits this description he had his parents killed in front of him as a baby and he was forced to live with his aunt and uncle and their terrible son. I’m really surprised he didn’t have an emotional breakdown tbh.

Beauty and the Beast… A beast of a book (a big book) that you were intimidated by, but found the story to be beautiful

I personally found Harry Potter an the Goblet of Fire to be HUGE I started reading the series in fifth grade so at the time a 700 page book seemed massive but I loved it so much it’s my favorite book in the series.

Aladdin… A character who gets their wish granted for better or for worse

For this I’m choosing Gatsby from The Great Gatsby all he wanted was Daisy back and he got her back, but not in the way he wanted.

Mulan… A character who pretends to be someone or something that they’re not

Okay, so for this I choose Maven from Red Queen if you’ve read the book you know exactly what the fuck if talking about ugh he is such a jerk, but I’m not going to spoil what happened so you’ll just have to read the book to know why.

Toy Story… A book with characters you wish could come to life

For this I choose the characters from Fangirl because all the characters are so nice and funny and Levi is absolutely amazing.

The Princess and the Frog… A character who fell in love with someone unexpected

For this I choose Ben and Lacey from Paper Towns they’re so unexpected but they end up working well together and being really cute.

So, that is the Disney book tag! If, you’ve seen the original you can tell I changed the last one. The original tag included the new Disney Descendants t.v show/book because it was a promotion for them done by Kat and some other booktubers but I felt uncomfortable promoting something to you guys that I didn’t know a whole lot about. Here’s a link to the original one by Kat if you would like to check it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWr3eIqBHqI

I hope you enjoyed this tag! Talk to you guys soon!

XOXO,

Madison

btw I think I’m going to start posting regularly on Sundays & Wensdays

My Favorite Disney Song;

When Will My Life Begin– Tangled

“And so I’ll read a book or maybe two or three
I’ll add a few new paintings to my gallery
I’ll play guitar and knit, and cook and basically
Just wonder when will my life begin?”

A feeling melancholy…

Hey guys. So, I’d just thought I’d update you all and let you know that I am expanding my blog!!!

So, I will be expanding my blog and I will now be posting about fashion and just general life dilemmas too. Don’t worry though I will still be posting book reviews too. So I am starting out this new expansion with my first “life” piece which will be starting right… now!

mel·an·chol·y

a feeling of pensive sadness, typically with no obvious cause.

So, this is how I’ve been feeling lately… a weird sadness with no cause that just makes me feel icky. That’s what I’ve been calling it, this sticky icky feeling that drags me down into sadness and discontent. But, here’s the thing I’m a really happy person I have great friends, awesome parents and generally great life but I’ve just been feeling this sadness. I’m not depressed or anything but it’s just weird I’m feeling this disconnect between me and life. Another blogger that I admire posted about this and it made me feel less alone so I thought I’d share about it too. I don’t know how to explain this feeling except with the word melancholy.

So, here I am writing about this sticky icky feeling so that maybe you guys will feel less sticky and icky. Ever since I’ve been feeling this way I’ve been looking for someway to describe it to finally make it real. So, I searched and looked for old lost words that may define this for me but then I realized I knew the word all along, melancholy. It happened in English class our teacher asked us to come up with words that also described sadness and my friend suggested the word melancholy. I realized I’ve heard the word and used it before but I never knew exactly what it meant so I looked it up. I read the definition and then I saw as an example “she was feeling a little melancholy” and I realized that’s me that’s the icky feeling that’s been following me around. Melancholy. Suddenly I felt a little bit of relief and a little bit less melancholy. So, I finally just realized it’s okay if I’m not happy all the time that’s just a part of life. My government teacher once said Americans have a strange obsession with happiness. This obsession of being happy is making me believe feeling anything besides happiness is wrong and it’s not. I guess now I can admit I feel more than happiness and that’s a good thing because I am feeling something.

“There is some kind of a sweet innocence in being human- in not having to be just happy or just sad- in the nature of being able to be both broken and whole, at the same time.”

My Song Suggestion:

Fleetwood Mac– Landslide

“Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Well, I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too”
