Cute Summer Reads

Raise your hand if you thought you’d find a summer love/fling/bae this summer! I know I’m definitely raising my hand (Bethany you know you are too). Now keep your hand raised if this did not happen! *Me and a million other girls keep our hands raised* Every year I tell myself I will find a summer romance for the ages. Full of cute dates and hand holding and all of those cute YA Romance worthy moments. But, a summer romance has not yet graced my presence. They are unrealistic but we all need our summer fling fix and while you may not have a real one my coping method is always to read a book about a cute summer fling (or a book with romancey summer flingy feelings) that has some awesome characters to live through. So, here are my recommendations for some books that will give you those cute summer flingy feelings; (oh and i’m gonna rate them on the “flirty scale” with cute kiss emojis 1 kiss=”OMG THAT WAS SO CUTE”  5 kisses=”How can I live with this much adorable/swoon-worthy romance!?”

I just recently read this book a couple of months ago and I absolutely loved it. You’ll have to read a full description on Goodreads but the book is set in a cute beach town and is very adorable <3.

“You couldn’t just pick and choose at will when someone depended on you, or loved you. It wasn’t like a light switch, easy to turn on or off. If you were in, you were in. Out, you were out.” — Sarah Dessen, Along for the Ride

This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith

c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415 c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415 c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415 c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415

I read this during the winter and I feel absolutely in love this was sooooooo great!!!

“It was exactly as he’d thought it would be, like the first time and the millionth time all at once, like being wide awake, like losing his balance. Only this time, it wasn’t just him; this time, they were losing their balance together.”
― Jennifer E. Smith, This Is What Happy Looks Like

Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen

c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415 c674d5746f3f669964324fc1faf8e415

I know I post a lot about Sarah Dessen in these kinds of challenges but she is the master of YA romance! I love this book because while it does have some very cute romancey moments I think it also talks about friendship and self-esteem and I love that. It also talks about when the romance doesn’t always work out and I think that’s great too.

“for once, you believed in yourself. you believed you were beautiful and so did the rest of the world.”
― Sarah Dessen, Keeping the Moon

I read this book last summer and I enjoyed it so much. The relationship was so cute and absolutely darling and at points it reminded me of those weird indie romance movies but I loved it. Especially because the book trailer was done by this film maker I love so much so you should totally check it out also I think the trailer gives you sooo many feels; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDwuE16oC5w

JUST READ IT THERE ARE ICE CREAM CONES ON THE COVER! Seriously though this book is very summery and very good.

“He looked right at me as he gave me a half smile. “You’re the brightest thing in the room”, he said. He lifted his hand from my waist, and slowly, carefully brushed a stray lock of hair from my cheek. “You shine””.― Morgan Matson, Since You’ve Been Gone

This book involves travel, cute British boys, and a little bit of mystery. What’s not to love?

Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality by Elizabeth Eulberg

Title: Revenge of the Girl With the Great Personality

Author: Elizabeth Eulberg

Published: March 1st, 2013

Genres: YA, Contemporary

Rating: 3.6/5

Summary:

Lexi has always been considered plain compared to her seven-year-old pageant queen sister. It ‘s been this way since the divorce when her mother stopped putting her energy into mothering and began putting all of her energy into pageants. Sure, Lexi’s got problems but she has friends, and she’s funny and I guess you could say she’s popular. But, she’s never been one of those girls the type who make boys fall head over heels for them. Lexi’s tired of being passed over from guys and having her mother care more about pageants than her. She’s the “girl with the great personality” and she’s done being in the background.

Review:

Okay. so when I first read the summary of this book I was just like #relateable. Okay I’m sorry for the use of the hashtag but i really thought this book was going to be a cute funny read but sadly it really didn’t live up to its title. The character Lexi is just so one-sided and I really hate how insecure and “weak” the author made her. I know that every girl has insecurities but I hate it when authors use a girl’s insecurities to propel the whole plot line. But I thought Lexi’s best friend was pretty truthful about Lexi’s apparent insecurities and brought her back down to earth.

“I hate that you let other people’s opinion influence you, especially if their delusional.”

And Lexi’s sister was absolutely fabulous I mean she was a total brat but she was sassy, dramatic and she completely reminded me of toddlers and tiaras.

I also didn’t like ow the author portrayed her crush on a guy I just wish she talked more about her life and family instead of overly romanticizing a high school crush.

“There you are!” Logan says, and I try to keep my heart from floating out of my body when he smiles at me.”

So.. this book wasn’t my favorite but I liked how the character evolved and there were some things that I found #relateable. Also, this sassy line toward the end made me just a little bit proud of the character.

“So I can take off the makeup, but I’m still a good person. But there’s no such thing as bitch remover.”

Also this was pretty cute;

“I, Lexi Anderson, am proud to say that I do, indeed, have a great personality.
And it’s only a matter of time before the Beautiful People will be wishing they had great personalities, too.
Good luck with that, oh Beautiful Ones.
Because we Great Girls are the rarest breed.”

Have a great weekend guys!

-p.s shutout to Bethany for getting me into blogging again-

Here’s a song I felt fit the book;

Melanie Martinez– Mrs. Potato Head

“Kids forever, kids forever
Baby soft skin turns into leather
Don’t be dramatic it’s only some plastic
No one will love you if you’re unattractive
Oh Mrs. Potato Head tell me, is it true that pain is beauty?
Does a new face come with a warranty?
Will a pretty face make it better?
Oh Mr. Potato Head tell me
How did you afford her surgery?
Do you swear you’ll stay forever
Even if her face don’t stay together.”

XOXO,

Madison ❤

P.S here’s a couple more cute gifs I found for Toddler and Tiaras

Okay this is probably how you guys are feeling right now;

The Frozen Book Tag!!!

So, I was tagged by Captivated~By~Fantasy to do this book tag and I am super excited! This is my first book tag so I hope you enjoy it!

1.Frozen heart… beautiful! Powerful! Dangerous! Cold! What character do you think of when you hear this description?

When I hear this definition I think of Warner from Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. He’s sexy, a little bit crazy, and dangerously irresistible. images

Do You Want To Build a Snowman?A character you want to build a snowman with…

I would want to build a snowman with Annie from Breathe, Annie, Breathe by Miranda Kenneally I love this character so much! She is such a strong and funny character who has never-ending perseverance. I would want to talk about how she got over the grief of losing her boyfriend and how she found such a cute new bae. I’d also want to know how she stopped hating running because I want to try to be more athletic 😛 .

For the first time in forever…  You haven’t been able to read anything in a long time and your TBR pile has been growing larger and larger. What book (of your TBR pile, so no rereads) would you pick?

I would read The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu it looks like a really good book with an interesting plot and it reminds me of 13 Reasons Why and I absolutely LOVED that book.

Love is an open door… With what book or which character (or both!) would love be an open door with it? Or for what book/which character would you close the door?

So I can’t pick just one so I would open the door to Derek from the Shadow Falls Series by C.C Hunter and I would also open the door to Kent from Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. Both characters are supportive, kind, and super cute and I would love the opportunity to fall in love with either of them. ❤ I would close the door on Jeremy from Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt. He is a total ass I mean who cheats on their girlfriend with another girl online and then tries to get her back?

Let it go…A book or book series you used to love but you let it go.

I used to read the Judy Moody by Megan McDonald all the time when I was younger but I stopped reading it a couple years ago.

Reindeers Books Are Better Than People… Let’s say you’re tired of people today. What book would you rather spend the day with?

I would rather spend the day with To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han. It is such a cute funny book and a great read.

In summer… A book perfect for summer

I think The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series is great for summer I also think the series The Winnie Years by Lauren Myracle is great for the summertime.

Fixer Upper… A book that’s a bit of a fixer-upper and should be fixed with a little bit of love ?

In Deep by Terra Elan McVoy need some fixing it has a difficult plot and I just had a lot of problems with it. I wrote a review about it here if you want to hear more about my issues with it.

Okay, that it that was A LOT of fun I hope you enjoyed it and I’m tagging all of you guys to do this challenge!

XOXO,

Madison ❤

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

71LkLmxqgjLTitle: Eleanor & Park

Author: Rainbow Rowell

Published: February 26th, 2013

Genres: YA,  Romance

Rating: 4.8/5

Summary:

Eleanor has always felt a little bit weird with her crazy red hair, weird sense of style, and messed up family she was an outsider. Park has always felt plain with his normal clothes, comic book collection, and cliche American family. When Eleanor sits next to him on the bus everything changes. They find each other irresistible and undeniably amazing. They understand that love is fleeting but they wan’t more than anything for it to work. As they begin to get closer complications arise as Eleanor’s abusive stepfather and society’s norms try to push them apart.

Review:

I knew this book was going to be good when I heard the author’s name was Rainbow. I absolutely loved this book I heard so many good things and this book exceeded my expectations. Rainbow Rowell is an AMAZING author who can switch between POV like a ninja. Park love Eleanor for her flaws which made me love Park even more. This book showed a love that was unimaginable and heart breaking. I felt like I was there with them feeling this emotional roller coaster they were riding together. The only reason that this book didn’t 5/5 was because the ending was lame I understand that “happy endings” are cliche but I felt that Eleanor and Park deserved the cheesiest most lovey-dovey ending ever and it made me sad that they didn’t get that. This book enchanted me and made me feel all the feels.

Here are some quotes I liked;

““I don’t like you, Park,” she said, sounding for a second like she actually meant it. “I…” – her voice nearly disappeared – “think I live for you.”
He closed his eyes and pressed his head back into his pillow.
“I don’t think I even breathe when we’re not together,” she whispered. “Which means, when I see you on Monday morning, it’s been like sixty hours since I’ve taken a breath. That’s probably why I’m so crabby, and why I snap at you. All I do when we’re apart is think about you, and all I do when we’re together is panic. Because every second feels so important. And because I’m so out of control, I can’t help myself. I’m not even mine anymore, I’m yours, and what if you decide that you don’t want me? How could you want me like I want you?”
He was quiet. He wanted everything she’d just said to be the last thing he heard. He wanted to fall asleep with ‘I want you’ in his ears.”

“Eleanor was right. She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.”

Ok so I know this review was random but I told you I was feeling the feels.

So you have to read the book to truly, honesty, deeply understand.

XOXO,

Madison

Here’s a song I felt fit the book;

Half a Heart– One Direction

“And being here without you is like I’m waking up to
Only half a blue sky
Kinda there but not quite
I’m walking around with just one shoe
I’m half a heart without you
I’m half a man at best,
With half an arrow in my chest
I miss everything we do,
I’m half a heart without you”

The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by Kody Keplinger

kody-keplinger-the-duffTitle: The DUFF  (Designated Ugly Fat Friends)

Author: Kody Keplinger

Published: September 7th, 2010

Genre: YA

Rating: 3.8

Summary:

Bianca had always been the “black sheep” in her group of friends she doesn’t like big parties or gossiping about new trends. So when she’s in a small teen club drinking a cherry coke she is surprised to hear from Wesley Rush that she is the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). After this Bianca begins to question every thought she’s ever had about herself. As her parent’s marriage crumbles and her dad begins drinking again Bianca takes solace in the one man who started it all, Wesley Rush. As Bianca and Wesley begin to grow closer through their “enemies-with-benefits” relationship she begins to realize that Wesley is a person with his own problems and he’s not just the womanizer he’s rumored to be.

Review:

Bianca reminds me of that one friend that every one has she’s witty, interesting, and always cynical. I liked this book’s message but I felt it was predictable. In the end she ended up falling in love with Wesley and I really wanted her to figure out she didn’t need a man to define herself. I had higher expectations for this book but I felt it had a pretty good ending and an interesting plot. Bianca was exposed for who she really was which helped her realize what she wanted to be. I found her funny and forgiving and I think the author portrayed her well. Kody Keplinger humanized a character by exposing the human tendency to want to be loved and to ignore the pain around us. She exposed every girl’s inner insecurities and told everyone that they don’t matter.

“Calling Vikki a slut or a whore was just like calling someone the DUFF. It was insulting and hurtful, and it was one of those titles that just fed off of an inner fear every girl must have from time to time. Slut, bitch, prude, tease, ditz. They were all the same. Every girl felt like one of these sexist labels described her at some point. So, maybe, every girl felt like the DUFF, too?”

This book made me realize sometimes I feel like a DUFF and that’s okay.

XOXO,

Madison

I thought this song fit the book;

Bastille– Flaws

“When all of your flaws and all of my flaws
Are laid out one by one
The wonderful part of the mess that we made
We pick ourselves undone
All of your flaws and all of my flaws
They lie there hand in hand
Ones we’ve inherited, ones that we learned
They pass from man to man
There’s a hole in my soul
I can’t fill it, I can’t fill it
There’s a hole in my soul
Can you fill it? Can you fill it?
You have always worn your flaws upon your sleeve
And I have always buried them deep beneath the ground
Dig them up; let’s finish what we’ve started
Dig them up, so nothing’s left untouched”

Here is a song I have been loving;

Sara Bareilles – Winter Song

“This is my winter song to you.
The storm is coming soon,
it rolls in from the sea

My voice; a beacon in the night.
My words will be your light,
to carry you to me.

Is love alive?
Is love alive?
Is love
They say that things just cannot grow
beneath the winter snow,
or so I have been told.

They say were buried far,
just like a distant star
I simply cannot hold.”
